We all know that we have two brain hemispheres, two minds, two consciousnesses – but few people realise their own need to use one to help the other to achieve their goals! Hypnosis works because ‘the imagination is more powerful than the intellect’.
That is quite a statement! But if it were not so, no one could have a problem! We would simply rationalise what is bothering us with our awareness and take our own good advice! Why is that so hard to do you may ask?
Imagine that our minds are like an iceberg. The conscious mind is just the tip of the iceberg visible above the surface of the water. The subconscious mind is the vast structure beneath the water line supporting that above. The information you are experiencing is like crude oil leaking up to the surface from below and digging down to clean it away can be a life long and arduous task.
When you go to sleep you become unconscious – submerged – and your subconscious mind can communicate in all its weird and wonderful ways to you. However, you can make no sense of the communication and may carry on for decades without acting upon the important information you have been given.
In Trance, we tip the iceberg on to its side and between us we clear the source of the oil away so it no longer vents to the top and whether you are fully conscious, asleep or in between in Trance, the ice is clean! Covering up your oil leak or looking the other way will not fix it!
Although the lack of communication between the two minds may be frustrating, it is tremendously useful to me as your therapist! Issues can be dealt with in the context of the code without the argument, debate, denial and discussion that the conscious mind insists upon. Even more useful than that is the ability to help someone without revivifying traumatic memories that have been safeguarded away.
So, to create any real lasting change you need the agreement of both your conscious and subconscious minds! When you have this agreement, you gain ‘peace of mind’ and that co-operation is so much more productive than conflict!
